“Fuck this place. We don’t gotta go back there.”
Transviolet are known for their upbeat jams, but their track “Freak Like Me” takes things to a whole other level. Long story short: shit gets real in a little under 4 minutes and the song’s accompanying video is a wild trip in and of itself.
Taken from their debut album, Born To Rule, “Freak Like Me” explores the depths of feeling utterly alone as one reaches out for a kindred soul to relate to. Whether you’re in high school, college, or just a toxic work/life environment, this is one anthem all of us so-called freaks can revel in while knowing there are other fellow freaks just like us out there.
“I wrote this song with my younger self in mind. I moved around a lot. Mostly to small towns where I was rarely understood. I was always the “weird girl” writing poems in my journal during class and painting in the art room during lunch break,” shared singer Sarah McTaggart in an Instagram post.
“I’ve been bi my whole life, but that wasn’t an easy thing for me to explain to my conservative family, so I didn’t come out, until right now I guess? honestly I don’t like that I even have to “come out.” I never should have had to hide in the first place. My first taste of fitting in was in college. I went to art school, and found out I wasn’t a freak at all… well I was, but there were plenty of freaks just like me. If you are in that small town now, feeling like a freak, I promise you, you are so far from alone.”
