The 1975 have been teasing their follow up to 2018’s A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships since before that album was even out, so naturally, the aura surrounding Notes On A Conditional Form – which finally has a release date of February 21 – has a certain mystery surrounding it.
Now, we’re not entirely sure what is going on here, but keep in mind that this is The 1975 and Matty Healy & co. always have something interesting up their sleeves as they continue to push boundaries. Plus, they have a way of making it impossible to look away, even when they deviate from their signature synth-pop aesthetics to go full on angry goth rock. Yeah, looks like we’re here for that too.
Let’s be real here: we definitely were not expecting lead single, “People,” to sound like it does. Were we taken aback? Yes. Are we confused? As fuck. Are we mad though? Absolutely not. If anything, the mystery of this new record will continue on until we hear the finished product, or at least until we get to hear some more tracks as the months go along leading up to its 2020 release.
The song’s accompanying video is reminiscent of watching MTV as a child and having your mom come storming in the room, telling you to turn that “angsty riot music off” as you were threatened with a punishment, so take that as you will. Needless to say, The 1975 have something to say and they always make damn sure we hear them say it. We’re listening and we’re counting down until February 21.
