“Songwriting is so freeing to me. Nobody has to hear it, or everybody can hear it. It’s all up to me, and it makes me feel safe,” the singer shared. “I honestly believe that songwriting is what’s made me who I am. When I write a new song, it’s like I’m a new person. I love the process, and it makes me feel like I belong. It’s crazy to me, because songwriting only came into my life a little over a year ago, but my life has changed entirely. I doubt everything I do, though. I’ve written songs about feeling like I’m not good at writing songs. It doesn’t matter who loves my songs, who hates my songs. It doesn’t even matter if I’m good at it. It gets me through everything and that’s honestly all that matters. Whatever I write doesn’t have to be ‘good,’ it just has to be me. I keep this journal with hundreds of songs in it, that I have basically no intention of anyone hearing. It belongs to me, and when I truly believe in what I’ve written, I’m can release that. When I get anxious, it feels like everything around me is gone. Songwriting brings me back to life. I owe so much to it. I’m grateful.”
