They say if you start off your day with music you enjoy, it helps you get in the right head space and boosts your mood and energy level for the rest of the day. But what happens when some of your favourite songs are melancholic, sad ones that suck you in with the first melody and you just can’t skip them?
I, for one, am really not a morning person and music usually helps. It just happened that one of these sad ones got stuck in my head, and on top of running on little sleep, I have also been unhappy with the way things were going at work today. Instant dragon-mood: ON.
Instead of curling up into a ball and sobbing all day, I figured it would be more fun to share my favourite ballads, old and new ones, and see what everyone else is listening to.
Hurts – “Stay”
Hurts are pretty much the embodiment of elegance and melancholy. I was having quite a hard time which song of theirs to put on this list. I remember “Stay” had quite the impact on me when it was released.
ED. Note: OMG the feels!!!

All Time Low – “Missing You”
All Time Low have written some of my favourite ballads, but “Missing You” is my current favourite off their latest album and perhaps their best yet. The lyrics are truly inspiring. Like a good friend, it encourages to not to be afraid asking for help to fight those demons and that it gets better with time.

My Chemical Romance – “I Don’t Love You”
Of course, the kings of emo cannot be missing from the list. This is the first MCR song I heard and I haven’t been emotionally stable ever since.

Oasis – “Don’t Look Back In Anger”
Because everyone loves a bit of 90`s British gloominess. Enough said.

5 Seconds Of Summer – “The Girl Who Cried Wolf”
This song is perfect example of how much 5SOS have matured as musicians and songwriters. The beautiful orchestral inserts make this track, fresh off their latest EP, even more special. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a working link but, sure you can find a way to give it a listen.
Lower Than Atlantis –”Another Sad Song”
Listening to this now, brings back memories from my time in the UK, and when I first discovered LTA. “Another Sad Song” is a typical rainy-day track.

Paramore – “Misguided Ghosts”
“Misguided Ghosts” must be one of Paramore’s most underrated songs. I don’t know why. It’s beautifully eerie, and the way it was recorded gives that ghostly feeling back perfectly. I still love it after all these years. “When It Rains” and “Last Hope” are other two Paramore songs that make me incredibly emotional.

Florence & the Machine – “Never Let Me Go”
As much as I adore the new album, this forever will be the ultimate Florence & the Machine song to me. Similarly to the Paramore one, I love its eeriness although, this one’s more theatrical.

Evanescence – “My Immortal”
If MCR are the kings, Amy Lee is the queen of dark melodies and heartfelt lyrics. With autumn coming, I might as well go on a listening session of their records – haven’t done that in a long time, and I actually miss them.

Ed Sheeran – “Thinking Out Loud”
This is typically one of those songs that isn’t particularly sad but very easy to connect with.
