We see them everywhere – from highways to bus stops to ads in magazines and online. Wherever we go, there’s almost always a billboard trying to sell us something society has told us we need; that we must fix our so-called imperfections to obtain a certain status of normalcy.
New York-based indie-pop artist, Aimee deBeer, is sick of the madness and her new track, “Billboards,” takes aim at the images that feed our insecurities. If you’re sick of society telling you who you should be and all the ways you are falling short, take notice of this one because this girl’s about to be on fire!
With the lyric of, “everything is beautiful and no one feels the pain,” taken from Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse Five leading as a mantra throughout the song, deBeer reminds us of the lies and expectations we have blindly taught ourselves. Creating an alternate reality in a somewhat dreamlike state, deBeer shows us what we’ve been fed and how to unravel the tangled web. Fans of Lana Del Rey, St. Vincent, and Perfume Genius are going to flip over this one!
