Signaling a transformative shift, “Spiral Descent” feels just like that – a culmination of frontman John Kunkel’s work over the years that has morphed into a brand new chapter for The New Division.
“I’ve been writing as The New Division for 20 years. Eventually, staying in the same lane started feeling stale—each new track felt repetitive, uninspired, like I was trapped inside a sound I’d lost passion for. ‘Spiral Descent’ marks the moment I realized a drastic sonic shift was essential to keep this project alive. Ultimately, ‘Spiral Descent’ isn’t about anything other than my own mental shifts as an artist. People evolve; what inspired us a decade ago won’t necessarily resonate today. Embracing a new sound, while scary, has been incredibly rewarding and refreshing. I now enter the studio excited and unrestricted. Sure, some long-time fans might pass on this new direction, but it was either evolve or end The New Division completely.”
