To each their own – we all have a tendency to connect music to memories, places, a person or a smell. I prefer seasons and since summer is the time of year when I’m most active and venture outside, it’s only appropriate to have a playlist for it. It’s been a busy period and new releases often overlapped one another but surely everyone can name their most defining hits of the season by now. Here, I curated tunes from all over the musical spectrum while I also highlight the personally memorable ones from synth-driven pop songs through lots of dreamy indie and little punk-rock to stay true to the roots.
Florence and the Machine
What’s a summer like without grand melancholy? I always looked at Florence Welch as the theatrical, fairy godmother of modern alt-pop and the new album High As Hope delivers as per usual. Find mysterious ancient woods or flower filled meadows with a lake, because that is the best location for the listen of “Hunger” and the rest.
Kacey Musgraves
I did not know I was a country fan until Kacey Musgraves turned me into one of sorts with her third studio album Golden Hour. The songwriting puts the emoest of the emo lyricists of past times to shame and also entertains with bops like “High Horse” – a fun, 70s disco-infused track.
The Maine
You might need to bring the tissues out for this one because acoustics always hit slightly harder than the original counterparts. A special collection of acoustic renditions by The Maine was released recently. It contains new versions of songs even from way back as “We’ll All Be” from the Can’t Stop Won’t Stop era (that’s ten years ago). It’s the perfect soundtrack to ponder on a hot summer evening and comes with less noise than the band’s performances on the last ever Warped Tour run.
The Aces
Their debut album When My Heart Felt Volcanic could be described in one very appropriate word: infectious. Very few records sucked me in as instantly as this one and “Volcanic Love” is only the tip of the iceberg as each track is a fierce, guitar driven indie-pop masterpiece on its own.
Find all this on the Summer of 2018 playlist among many more. We have George Ezra, Pale Waves, James Bae Bay, CHVRCHES, State Champs, brand new St.Lucia, grown up 5SOS and Twenty One Pilots have also returned in case you haven’t heard yet – and don’t forget to enjoy the summer!
