It is hard to pinpoint the exact element of a song that inspires a person to start over and try again. For some it might be a specific lyric, the mood, the artist or maybe something as simple as hearing the song at the pivotal moment the listener needed its inspiration the most. Whatever the reason, that’s the song you immediately play on repeat when times start to get hard again, hoping for peace, comfort, and motivation to flow through you with every beat of the song. We can’t fathom the reason for having to go through such a rough time, but that specific song helps us to believe that whatever the reason, it will all work out in the end.
Frank Iero, former guitarist of My Chemical Romance, gave me a new perspective on the healing power of music when, to paraphrase, in an interview he talked about how fans would tell him that their music “saved his or her life.” Iero went on to say that their music isn’t what saved that fan’s life; instead, it was something much greater, that fan’s inner strength. My interpretation of this is that a specific song can’t save a persons life, but it has a much greater power, to motivate and inspire certain individuals to awaken his or her inner-strength in order to keep going; inner-strength that maybe the individual lost along the way, or is just discovering. Either way, the message of that specific song motivated the listener to find it again. It motivated the listener unlike anyone or anything else could to get back up when times were the hardest, and give it another shot.
Every person has a specific song on stand by for various reasons when times like these hit. Today, I thought I would share with you a few songs that comfort me, and inspire me to start over again during these times. And who knows, maybe there’s a specific song in here that one of you is meant to hear at this time in your life.
