For millions of fans around the world, the Spice Girls were the epitome of our childhoods. From collecting every piece of merchandise to having dance parties in our poster-laden bedrooms to their biggest hits, there’s no denying the impact those five girls from London had back in the day.
Toronto singer-songwriter, STACEY, has unleashed quite possibly the most gorgeous rendition of the Spice Girls’ 1996 classic, “2 Become 1,” we’ve ever heard. Scintillating synths and hazy, chilling Lana Del Rey-esque melodies take over as a fan favorite takes on a new meaning, making STACEY’s version of “2 Become 1” a modern-day anthem of equality, love, and hope in these trying times.
“The Spice Girls were my earliest introduction to pop music. It was the first time I became a devoted fan of a musical act; I had Spice Girl postcards, stickers, you name it. To be an adult woman & musician now, covering this song some 20 years later is a really fun full circle moment for me,” shared the singer.
“I chose ‘2 Become 1’ because it’s undeniably gorgeous, especially melodically & structurally. I wanted to bring it into a more psychedelic space since a lot of the lyrics feel reminiscent of a 60s peace & love era. The production north star was ‘Tame Impala Del Rey flower-child.'”
