“drivers license” grapples with teenage and suburban angst as Rodrigo tells the tale of gaining her freedom with a bittersweet twist of a broken heart. Most young Disney stars have gone straight for the upbeat pop route with their first singles, but this is such a refreshing indie meets singer-songwriter vibe of a debut with a promising future. Think: Taylor Swift, Alessia Cara, Billie Eilish, and Maggie Rogers all in one but even more heartachingly beautiful than her inspirations combined.
The song’s accompanying video just screams “night drive aesthetic” and will have you reaching for those tissues as you reminisce on your first heartbreak. One thing’s for sure: if this is any indication of what’s to come, we cannot wait for the next release!
