Our boys, Honestly, are back with brand spankin’ new track, “Selfish Years.” The track is set to be featured on the band’s expanded version of their debut album, Inside Your Eyes, Without You Beside Me, out on July 9.
Nothing screams ‘summer’ more than “Selfish Years.” Expanding on their already stunning romantic indie-pop vibes, “Selfish Years” delves into partners being at different stages in their lives. Sexually charged as it is romantic and rather heartbreaking, the track questions the conflicts of throwing away commitment and living out those ‘selfish years’ as a young twenty-something, or giving in to a relationship that might have been doomed from the start.
“Ever since I turned 20 I have been constantly told by my older peers to always live my twenties to my fullest and be conscious of how enjoyable my ‘selfish years’ should be,” shared singer Eric Canto. “When people say ‘be young and enjoy being young’ in terms of romance, what they really mean is have a lot of sex and date a lot of people before you’re suddenly married. However, not every person shares that desire or finds fulfillment in that. This song perfectly captures the dynamic of the new B-side of this record which is about how confusing it is to date and find love in your twenties, and having it be the most transitory times of young adult life. You’re constantly wrestling with the thought of not making long term mistakes, as well as trying to live life in the most fun, spontaneous way. Before you know it, you’re wrapped in situationships that are seemingly doomed from the start, for any given reason, and you must decide; do I potentially take a long term risk? Or do I live my selfish years now, and continue to be risk averse and avoid potential growth? That describes this song, this half of the album, and the past 4 years of my life.”
