What do you get when you pair two New York powerhouse female artists together for an explosive f-you anthem? Magic.
Brooklyn based artist/producer, Tiger Darrow, has teamed up with our darling Vaeda Black to deliver scorching new anthem, “Boyz Club.” True to the styles of both artists, “Boyz Club” is a fun alt-pop gem tinged with some serious 90’s R&B throwback vibes that just scream TLC! The core, however, is where all things shine as it delves into the blatant sexism in the male-dominated music industry – something both artists have faced early on in their careers.
“I’ve had a man in the music industry invite me into his office and tell me ‘my boss says I always have the hottest artists in here,'(no, he didn’t mean musically speaking). I’ve had a man challenge me when I’ve offered to record my own vocals from home and ask what mic I use. He was shocked and embarrassed when I told him my vocal chain with great specificity. I used to be so gullible, so shy and polite to a fault. Fortunately, I’ve reached a point in my career where I truly have no problem calling men out on their shit, and that’s what ‘Boyz Club’ is for me,” shared Darrow.
“With every passing year, I become more and more apprehensive towards working with men. I’ve found that the kindness and opportunity that is dangled in front of me by them is misleading and expecting. It was such a harsh reality check when I realized that their kindness was transactional and put me in situations that were dangerous. It’s exhausting to have every man you work with try something with you… I am so much more than my body. The music industry (and let’s not kid ourselves, the world) is a boy’s club. I want men to listen to this song and think about their behavior. I want women to listen and feel empowered; to set boundaries and never let a man make you question your worth,” shared Black.
“Boyz Club” is a fists-in-the-air salute to those fighting the patriarchy running the music business, and a comforting reminder that we are never alone.
