It’s been no secret that the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the music industry in many ways, but shoegaze/dreampop outfit, Juliper Sky, have been dazzling us with new releases in a rather timely manner considering the circumstances. While the band definitely has faced challenges during lockdown, they’re not letting it stop them!
New single, “Afterglow,” is the band’s sixth release and we couldn’t be more excited. Originally a b-side to their 2019 single, “Waves,” this new addition to their catalog showcases their range and sound progression from their first release almost one year ago.
With limited studio availability over the spring, the band had to think outside of the box for this release. Guitarist Liam Grindell shared, “To be honest this track was vastly different to start with. It was definitely intended to be a slow burner and was a lot less punchy than the beast it has turned into. We never intended for it to be a serious release but was a live jam we always liked to use to break up the live set. It just so happens that when recording drum tracks for a previous release, we had a spare twenty minutes before the end of the session, and obviously, as we are tight northerners Ben slapped down the original incarnation of the track to make the most of the time, and money. When it dawned on us that we were going to struggle in recording any of the new demos over the spring it was a relief to release that we had those drum stems ready and waiting in the wings. So with a lot of chopping, rearranging and re writing we end up with the much more streamlined version of the track. This manifestation is definitely more to the point and it has made us see the track in a completely different light.”
“Afterglow” just might be their best timed release yet as it touches on frustration and confusion while being lost and unsure of the path ahead. One thing is for sure: if they keep releasing tracks like this, they have a very bright future ahead of them, and we are so excited to go along for the ride!
“Lyrically, the track explores feelings of being lost and not truly knowing who or what you are supposed to be. You know there is something in there, a fire and a desire to be what you want to be but have not found out how to achieve it. In essence, it is a song of frustration, of not being able to comfortably release what lies inside,” shared vocalist Jamie Lambert.
