RIYL: Halsey, Transviolet, CHVRCHES
Vancouver based alt-pop duo, Velaxox – comprised of Nicole Gibson and Chris Kelly – are ready to dazzle the world with their brand of alternative dark-pop and genuine songwriting.
The duo’s newest release, “Somebody That I Liked,” delves into a specific period in Nicole’s life when she hit a mental health low due to her anxiety. We’ve all been there – we berate ourselves for hitting such a low point, wondering why we just can’t be normal and snap out of it. Using “horror-like imagery,” “Somebody That I Liked” portrays what it’s like to constantly be in your own head and how it can often feel like a never-ending horror film of sorts.
“I remembered a specific moment during this time where I was in the shower and had broken down into tears wondering why my brain was doing this and why I couldn’t go back to happy normal Nicole and be somebody that I liked again. I have tried to write this song again and again and it never felt quite right but during the pandemic last year it finally came out during a songwriting session with Chris who really helped me tear this time in my life apart and get it out into a song.”
Velavox are currently in the studio working on a collection of songs described as “angsty pop anthems” set to be released in the coming months. Stay tuned!
