RIYL: St. Lucia, Vampire Weekend, Atlas Genius
The band name of Cape Town indie-pop band, The World of Birds, may sound like a tropical wildlife exhibit, but there’s more where that came from. The South African four-piece – comprised of Nic Lighton Preen, Benjamin McCarthy, Red Robyn, and Conor McCarthy – captured our attention with their breezy yet wildly infectious buzz track, “Open Up,” and the best part is that there’s more to come!
The band’s homemade video for “Open Up” takes on a retro indie-pop vibe that will most likely have you hit the repeat button as we continue to wait out our quarantines around the world. Not a bad way to spend your time, if you ask us.
“‘Open Up’ was written on a tropical beach in the middle of nowhere, Mozambique. After days with no electricity, a broken generator and no signal to the outside world, we managed to revive and old car battery to power our homemade studio. Without any knowledge of how long the battery might last and the prospect of the nearest town being four hours through jungle, the birds began with the opening line of ‘Open Up,'” shared the band. “Through necessity and sweat induced vision, the birds came away with the rough song structure that was to become our first single as a group. The message of ‘Open Up’ is to be honest with others, especially those of a sexual nature and integrity. The underlying message to just relax and be open to all of ones thoughts and feelings, thus creating a relationship void of deceit and unintended heartbreak.”
