RIYL: Oasis, Doves, The Stone Roses
The perfect blend of Brit-rock meets indie, The Institutes – comprised of Reid Zappa Currie, Andy Hall, Kirk Savage, and Andy Lowe – have been on repeat for us here for the past couple of weeks after Chain Gang of 1974’s Kamtin Mohager recommended them on social media. Kam’s picks are usually on point, but this one is spectacularly good.
Reminiscent of the days of visiting department stores with miniature TVs playing alternative videos from MTV royalty (Garbage, Oasis), The Institutes transport listeners right back to the mid-90s where just the mere thought of a pandemic sounded asinine and rock music ruled the airwaves. Let’s just stay there for a while.
The band recently released their debut album, Colosseums – a thrilling mix of fear, longing, regret, and love – via 42’s Records. Standout track, “I Just Can’t Keep Myself From Loving You” will have you hooked instantly as that one person comes to mind who you can’t quite seem to give up.
The band have seen enormous support from BBC Radio and rightfully so. It’s only a matter of time before they start making waves everywhere else.
