RIYL: Cuecliché, COIN, Smallpools
Cincinnati indie-pop trio, Malibu Wild, may be new on your radar, but these guys are heating up the industry in a big way. Comprised of Joey Trentman, Corey Witsken, and Zach Backus, Malibu Wild may only have one song out, but that didn’t stop them from playing a show with 90s alt-rock legends, Gin Blossoms! We guess you could call that an ‘American dream.’
Described as “Midwest California pop,” the band’s debut single, “American Dream” is just enough to get you instantly hooked and eager for new music. If their indie-pop goodness wasn’t enough, you should probably know that they’re also huge LANY fans and almost named their band after a lyric from “pink skies.”
In an interview with CincyMusic, they shared a fun tidbit: “We really wanted to use a line from LANY’s song “pink skies” as the name. The line was “Malibu Indigo” but after pitching it to some friends and getting feedback it didn’t really roll off the tongue so well, but then one day our guitarist Corey calls and explains how he can’t explain it, but the name is Malibu Wild. He didn’t know why exactly, he just said it felt right. We trusted his gut and have been “Malibu Wild” ever since.”
For the record: Malibu Indigo would have been rad as well.
