RIYL: Olivver The Kid, Dominic Fike, Twenty One Pilots
Caribbean-American songwriter, Benjamin Carter, is a force to be reckoned with. The musician and entrepreneur uses his music as his voice to tell stories on heartache, love, addiction, gentrification and racial oppression in hopes of developing artists of the next generation to do the same.
Hailing from both The Cayman Islands as a child and then Washington DC as he grew up, Carter is representing the best of both worlds. Self-describing his journey with songwriting and performing as what it looks like to be a “first generation child of the internet” or more specifically “YouTube,” Carter vividly remembers being a kid discovering Japanese anime and music videos from Linkin Park and 50 Cent while living on a 28 mile long island at the very beginning of the site’s rise to popularity.
New track “Lost Control” – produced by Simon Oscroft (MOTHXR, The Aces, Juliana Madrid) is a haunting yet chill-inducing gem on asking for help and a lifeline that is sure to keep Carter on your radar the second you press play!
“’Lost Control’ is a cry for help to put it as bluntly as possible. The song sonically resembles my personality and how I handle my emotions sometimes unfortunately in unhealthy ways. It’s me trying to make the situation fun, it’s sarcastic in the pre-chorus, it’s energetic, it’s angry at points, it’s emotions in the lyrics are very visual from catching me crying and me screaming, ‘I thought no one was in there,’ or in verse 2 saying how I don’t fit in, yet it’s ‘not fair because I feel like I was here first.’ The idea of this song is a question or a prayer asking whoever is listening to give me a sign, give me anything to hold onto before I lose control.”
