[ALBUM REVIEW] Tall Poppies – ‘Let’s Go Out’

This June has already proven to be a fruitful one in terms of new music being released and it’s not even over yet! Summer is on full force, poppies are blooming in the fields and coincidentally or not, London’s Tall Poppies are also releasing new material today!

Let’s Go Out is an ambitious effort to work 70s retro influences into modern indie-pop. In doing so, the four-piece creates a memorable listen for experimental music lovers and those aiming for nostalgia in a contemporary setting.

The most prominent feature of the music of Tall Poppies is the violin played by Diarmuid; that being a rather neglected instrument in pop music and most resembles the music scene in Hungary – it’s a recurring element with popular alternative musicians there who aim for a bit of a folk sound. All this ties in well with Doug’s rhythmic lead on drums (previously the drummer in Noah and the Whale) and the life stories told by twins Susan and Catherine via their one of a kind vocals and harmonies.

The 11 track record is best described as a hot summer night spent on the riverside promenade, drinking wine and eating good food. That is how songs like “U.S.A.” “Heart Palpitations” and “Temper” make the listener feel – the later further mesmerizing with those opening guitar riffs. “Cat Got Your Tongue” is easily the most energetic and uplifting one out of the bunch. It takes the crown by changing the mostly chilled-out vibes and brings some cheeky fun.

In conclusion, Let’s Go Out could go hand-in-hand with Martha Ffion’s Sunday Best (that we still really adore from earlier this year) and start a retro musical revolution on tour together.
